OpenCaching: A new geocaching community for the whole family.
CLIENT // Garmin
DESCRIPTION // OpenCaching is a new geocaching brand I created for Garmin. The main components of this project included a website for looking up and listing geocaches, a mobile app, and a whole bunch of promotional items.
WHAT I WORKED ON // I created the original branding for OpenCaching, and did all the design work for the brand, until the property was discontinued in 2014. For these projects, I collaborated closely with a copywriter, as well as a front-end developer, a back-end developer, and the mobile app team.
Brand
Website
The OpenCaching website is the core piece of the brand, and is the central hub for downloading and posting geocaches.
Mobile App
I designed UI graphics and provided light UX support for the OpenCaching iOS and Android app. Even though most serious geocachers use dedicated outdoor GPS devices, a key part of the OpenCaching audience is rookie geocachers. Therefore, we decided to build a basic smartphone app for finding caches, since these new cachers likely wouldn’t have a dedicated GPS device.
Pathtags
Pathtags are collectible geo-trackable coins that are popular among the geocaching crowd. I created a series of OpenCaching-branded coins to be handed out at various geocaching events.
Kids T-shirt
This is a kids t-shirt used as a promotional giveaway at geocaching events. The idea was to include hand-drawn illustrations of all sorts of things a kid might encounter when hiking for geocaches.
Opie the Chipmunk
Opie the Chipmunk is the official OpenCaching mascot. Opie is the welcoming face of the brand, representing geocaching fun for all ages. I created this style guide as a way to maintain visual consistency for the character.
