Adding Beneficiaries to the Justworks App
CLIENT // Justworks
DESCRIPTION // Justworks offers its customers the option of life and AD&D (accidental death and dismemberment) insurances for their employees through MetLife. However, the low-tech process for employees to specify a beneficiary for their policies was rather clunky – employees had to download a PDF form from MetLife, print and fill out the form, then scan and email the completed form back to Justworks. We wanted to improve the user experience by integrating this process into the app.
Additionally, we were hoping to increase the percentage of life and AD&D insurance customers who have beneficiaries defined, by making the process easier with fewer steps. Specifying a beneficiary is important, because if there is no beneficiary defined, the insurance payout goes back to the company.
THE TEAM // For this project, I worked with an engineer and a product manager for the benefits team.
Research and Define the Problem
When an employer decides to offer life insurance and AD&D policies to its employees, employees are automatically enrolled into the policy. However, if the employee doesn't explicitly specify one or more beneficiaries in case of an insurance payout, then the insurance money gets paid out to the employer. So naturally, employees have a high incentive to list at least one beneficiary. However, the current process for doing so was rather slow and clunky, including having to fill out a MetLife-branded PDF form, and then email that form back to Justworks as an attachment.
Additionally, having this process take place within the app gave us the opportunity to increase brand confidence, by making an inconvenient process faster and easier. Since both the life insurance and AD&D policies are bundled together as one product, we felt like we could find ways to make the process even more efficient, by allowing users to quickly import their beneficiaries from one type of insurance to the other.
Goal #1
Create a seamless user experience for defining life and AD&D insurance beneficiaries, by integrating the process into the Justworks app.
Goal #2
Increase the percentage of customers who have beneficiaries specified for their policies life and AD&D insurance policies.

User Flow Map
Edit Percentages Module
This is the edit percentages state on the Life Insurance Summary page, as shown in the user flow map above. This section is where users can adjust by percentage how their insurance proceeds will be allocated to their beneficiaries. Once a new beneficiary is added, the user is taken back to the Summary page with this module in the edit state, so that he or she can define how much of the insurance payout should be given to that entity.
This module uses real-time validation, to make sure all the percentage splits listed do not use decimals and add up to a sum total of 100%.
